The First Genetically Modified Human Embryo PDF Print E-mail
Written by Frank Daly
Tuesday, 13 May 2008 08:15
embryo_cc_loreleiranveigIt was only a matter of time until it happened, scientists have created the first genetically modified human embryo. It was just a proof-of-concept experiment -  they added a green florescent protein to the embryo. Five days later it was destroyed and they say the longest these experiments are likely to be kept "alive", is a few weeks. They also say that genetically modified embryos will never be implanted in the womb and brought to full term as this change would then be replicated through future generations. It looks like Pandora's box has been opened. Let the genetic and ethical wars begin... Read more about it in Wired.

test tube (cc adobemac)Is gene testing worth it? There are now a considerable number of gene tests for many conditions but doctors dont know which ones are really useful, which can lead to misleading situations. Also 30% of potential volunteers for studies involving genes are backing out because they are afraid of loosing insurance or being discriminated against. And this is just the tip of the iceberg regarding issues around this scientific area.

My Brain Made Me Buy It PDF Print E-mail

shoes (cc_porcelaingirl)You could say that half the world's population are addicted to shopping (i.e. women), however recent research has shown that the brain chemistry of spenders compared to non-spenders is significantly different just before the purchase. A group of economists and psychologists found that although the cost and desire are important factors in the decision to buy, it turns out that certain people are addicted to the excitement and the high from buying, and it can be the greatest deciding factor. So it seems, the next time your significant other arrives in with yet another pair of new shoes, just remember, it was an unconscious decision which she had no control over. Radiohead: No more free albums PDF Print E-mail
Written by Frank Daly
Thursday, 01 May 2008 22:33

Radiohead (cc Michell Zappa) Last year Radiohead released a digital download album on the Net and asked their fans to pay what they thought it was worth, effectively reinventing the music industry. They don't have a label so of course they were free to do as they please, and this is one experiment which didn't work. Now six or seven months later they're putting this genie back in the bottle, and Thom Yorke said recently that they'd be un-inventing the music industry and going back to the traditional sales model. Indian Facade (cc Ahron de Leeuw)Muslims in Solapur in India have an ancient ritual which involves throwing their young babies from tall buildings, "to improve their health". They claim no babies have ever been injured and that the babies are actually stronger for it. I guess this is a practical example of "if it doesn't kill you, it makes you stronger" !! View the video of the dropping babies on YouTube.com but don't try this at home.

10 Ideas that are changing the world PDF Print E-mail
Written by Frank Daly

Cracked Earth (cc azrainman)

It's not politics and it's not money, it's ideas which are the secret power of planet Earth. Time magazine details 10 crucial ideas to get you thinking...

1. Recognizing our Common Wealth (on a global scale)
An excerpt from Jeffrey Sachs book The End of Poverty, explores this generations greatest challenges - environment, demography, poverty and global politics, and concludes that our generation must solve
the problem of combining growth of economic well being with environmental sustainability.

2 The End of Customer Service
Barbara Kiviat, outlines the growth of self-service and the death of customer service, from Tesco self-checkout stores, to airport self-check-in, and hospital emergency self-check-in to automated sushi restaurants with no waiters. All this change results in great efficiency and cost-savings, but ultimately the customer has been relegated from driver to a cog in the economic machine.

3 The Post-Movie-Star Era
Richard Corliss poses the question, are movie stars obsolete? Hollywood is making much more from animated features such as Ratatouille and Alvin and the Chipmunks, than from films such as Charlie Wilson's War which starred award winning, and high priced actors Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, so what is their future?

These are just three of the 10 ideas explored it the Time feature. The others are Reverse Radicalism, Kitchen Chemistry, Geo-Engineering, Synthetic Authenticity, The New Austerity, Mandatory Health and Re-Judaizing Jesus. Be prepared for a lot of enjoyable brain expansion when you read more in Time magazine.
